An essential principle of the ministerial priesthood is
that God works through men who have a special
spiritual role within the Church to communicate his
grace and truth. Both Catholics and Evangelicals
affirm Paul’s teaching that Jesus is the sole mediator
between God and us, but Catholics recognize that
Jesus was at liberty to allow his mediation to be
worked through the apostles and their successors in
the Church.

The Catholic Priesthood
St. Paul tells the community of Corinth, in First Corinthians, chapter 5, to cast out a sinner
from the group for the sinner's own sake.
1 Cor 5:1 It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and of a kind that is not
found even among pagans; for a man is living with his father's wife.
1Co 5:2 And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this
be removed from among you.
1Co 5:3 For though absent in body I am present in spirit, and as if present, I have already
pronounced judgment
1Co 5:4 in the name of the Lord Jesus on the man who has done such a thing. When you
are assembled, and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus,
1Co 5:5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit
may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
In his Second Letter to the community of believers at Corinth, he agrees to allow the man in
question to rejoin the community of believers.
2 Cor 2:10 And to whom you have pardoned any thing, I also. For, what I have pardoned, if I
have pardoned any thing, for your sakes have I done it in the person of Christ: (DR)

He says that he is doing it in "person of Christ" or in the Greek, in "Persona Christi".
This is what the Catholic Church has taught for over 2,000 years! That when the Priest
administers a Sacrament, such as in this case, The Sacrament of Penance, he is actually
standing in for the only Mediator between God and man, Jesus Christ.
1 Tim 2:5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man
Christ Jesus,
As such the minister of Christ, is standing in for Christ who is our 'great high priest'.
Heb 4:14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
The minister must also be a consecrated priest.
John 17:19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth.
The minister of Christ must be a "consecrated Priest" in order to administer His Sacraments in
the "Person of Christ."
