PART II of a four part series on "The Passion of The Christ", a movie by Mel Gibson.
When Jesus is brought before Caiaphas and the elders, the final charge against Him is blasphemy. Which invoked the death penalty. (Leviticus 24:16) But under the occupation by the Romans, the Jews were not allowed to put anyone to death. That is why Jesus was brought to Pilate. (M) Jesus to the elders... (B) John 18:20 "Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together; I have said nothing secretly. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me, what I said to them; they know what I said." 22 When he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, "Is that how you answer the high priest?"
(M) (switch scenes to the Last Supper) Jesus says; (ME, B) John 6:51 "I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh." 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; 54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." Showing the connection between The Passion and the Last Supper. At first, this idea may seem strange. When we understand the background, we can see the connection. Remember, the Passover was celebrated because the angel of death the "Destroyer", during the time of the 10 plagues in Egypt, when the Jews were slaves, was sent to kill every firstborn son of all the households that did not follow God`s warning. The Destroyer or the angel of death, "passed over" every Hebrew home that had lamb's blood on the doorpost. God told the Hebrews to follow a certain "ritual" in order to be spared from the angel of death. This "ritual" entailed many commands. One was that the family after slaughtering a "perfect lamb", "without blemish", had to sprinkle the blood on their doorposts, but they also had to eat the lamb or the ritual was not complete and they would awake to find their firstborn sons dead. (Exodus 12)
(M) back to the Questioning... 2 members of the Elders try, without success to stop the proceedings. One runs in and shouts that they cannot do this "This is a travesty!" Showing that not all of the Sanhedrin were against Him. Although no names are mentioned, they could be Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus because we see from the Gospel accounts that these men were sympathetic to the teachings of our Lord. Joseph of Arimathea (gave up his burial plot for the Lord) and Nicodemus (came in the night to question Jesus [John 3])
(M) The High Priest asks Jesus... (B) Matthew 26:62 "And the high priest stood up and said, "Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?" 63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, "I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." 64 Jesus said to him, "You have said so. But I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."65 Then the high priest tore his robes, and said, "He has uttered blasphemy. Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?" They answered, "He deserves death." 67 Then they spat in his face, and struck him; and some slapped him,"
(M) The crowd goes wild hitting Jesus.
(M) Peter is recognized as a follower of Jesus. When confronted he denies Him three times. [* switch to - Jesus and Peter talking] (B) Matthew 26:35 "Peter said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you." And so said all the disciples." Matthew 26:75 "And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, "Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly." (M) Peter sees Mother Mary, he falls to the ground before her and confesses his betrayal, his weakness...calling her "Mother". Although this scene is not in the bible, the director might have been stressing the "Intercession of the Mother of the King of Kings". We see a precursor of this idea under the Old Covenant, in the teaching on the Gebirah or "Queen mother".
In (1 Kings 2:19) we see King Solomon's mother Bathsheba speaking to the King on behalf of someone! In this verse King Solomon sets up a throne for his mother on his right hand, and he bows to her! How appropriate it is for the Blessed Mother to speak on our behalf to her son the King of Kings!
Peter leaves the courtyard.
(M) Judas approaches the High Priest and says; "release Jesus...I repent"... (B) Matthew 27:3 "When Judas, his betrayer, saw that he was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,"
Judas leaves_ then we have Judas being molested by children who turn into demons when he curses them... "you little Satans". Perhaps the director was showing that Satan can appear good, as the children, "for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light." (2 Corinthians 11:14)
(M) The Blessed Mother, Mary & John walk through a courtyard. The Blessed Mother goes on ahead a few steps and lays on the stone floor ...placing her face against the stone_ the camera moves through the floor_ where we can see Jesus handcuffed to the ceiling below... again... (ME) showing the connection between Mother & Son ...the New Eve and the New Adam... (ME, B) 1Corinthians 15:22 "For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive." & 1Corinthians 15:45 "Thus it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit." (ME) Always showing Mother Mary's inextricable connection to Jesus and being part of the Redemption... (ME, B) 1 Corinthians 3:9 "For we are God's co-workers; you are God's field, God's building." Which also shows the idea of, Co-Redemptrix. The movie shows her prominence as the New Eve. Irenaeus (Contra Haereses, III, xxii, 4), "And thus also it was that the knot of Eve's disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary. For what the virgin Eve had bound fast through unbelief, this did the virgin Mary set free through faith."
(M) The "demon" children chase Judas into the dessert. Satan is among them. Then they all disappear and Judas finds himself by a dead donkey rotted with flies and maggots, with a rope for a bridle. He then takes the rope on the donkey's mouth and hangs himself... (ME, B) Matthew 27:5 "And throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed; and he went and hanged himself." (ME) Showing that when Satan uses someone he doesn't treat them well afterwards but abuses them further.
There are many people who mistakenly believe that hell is "THE IN PLACE TO GO". They think that hell is filled with all the "PARTY ANIMALS", maybe, but I know that I wouldn't want to go someplace where even the demons try not to go, "before the appointed time" (Matthew 8:29). Matthew 8:29 "They cried out, "What have you to do with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time?"
(M) Jesus is brought to the Praetorian. Pilate is now involved. He [Pilate] tries to listen to his wife Claudia who had a bad dream about Jesus and asked him not to get involved. Matthew 27:19 "While he was still seated on the bench, his wife sent him a message, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man. I suffered much in a dream today because of him." Pilate, tries to placate the Jews at first, then he brings Jesus into his home and questions Him. Pilate asks Him if He is a king? Jesus is silent. (ME, B) Isaiah 53:7 "He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth."
John 18:37 "Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears my voice." 38 Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again, and told them, "I find no crime in him." (M) "What is truth?" "Quid est veritas?"
(M) Pilate trying to wriggle out of the inevitable, sends Jesus to Herod. Luke 23:7 "And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time." (M) Herod questioned Jesus but He was silent. (ME, B) Luke 23:9 "So he questioned him at some length; but he made no answer." (M) Herod sends Jesus back to Pilate. (ME, B) Luke 23:11 "And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then, arraying him in gorgeous apparel, he sent him back to Pilate."
(M) Pilate speaking to his wife, asks her if she knows what truth is and she says yes don't you? He says no, tell me... she replies that if he doesn't know truth no one can tell him. Pilate was afraid of political unrest. "That is my truth" he says to his wife. "I am personally opposed to abortion but I uphold a woman's right to choose."
(M) Pilate to the crowd... (ME, B) Luke 23:13 "Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was perverting the people; and after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him; 15 neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Behold, nothing deserving death has been done by him"
(M) Pilate offers to release Barrabas. (ME, B) Luke 23:18 "But they all cried out together, "Away with this man, and release to us Barab'bas"-- 19 a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city, and for murder. 20 Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus"
(ME, B) Mark 15:12 "And Pilate again said to them, "Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?" 13 And they cried out again, "Crucify him." 14 And Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify him." 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barab'bas; and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified."
(M) The Scourging...
The High Priest and the Elders of the Sanhedrin, the crowd, the Temple guards Mother, Mary & John all looking on from the sides and back of the yard where Jesus is scourged. Jesus is stripped to the waist. Then He is chained to a waist high block of wood. Truly a butchers block! For these Roman soldiers were up for the task of torture & torment. First He is given 30 lashes with half inch wooden rods. After about 20 lashes. Some of the Elders begin to leave. 2 more lashes and we see Satan in the crowd behind the Temple guards .. 7 more lashes and the High Priest and his cronies begin to leave 2 more lashes and they stop the beating of Jesus with rods of wood... Jesus is down on the ground chained to the wooden block... Mother Mary is watching... Jesus, His whole body shaking stands up, covered with blood...
(ME) The Roman soldiers seem to be teasing each other. Maybe that the ones beating Jesus are too weak to inflict enough pain. They are speaking in Latin, so I can only guess at their conversation.
