Originally written, Wednesday, March 10, 2004 For ease of sharing, I will separate the movie into four chronological parts or teachings.
The Passion - PART I of a four part series on The Passion of The Christ, a movie by Mel Gibson. Jesus Christ is the Son of God and He laid down His life for all mankind, for their sins.
First let me comment that this is a very Christian movie and that Catholicism is the "fullness" or "completeness" of Christianity.
The Passion opens in the Garden of Gethsemane, showing dark and ominous clouds. We see Christ praying in Aramaic. He walks towards where three apostles wait, (Peter- whom He calls - [Kepha], James and a young John) are sleeping. Jesus speaks, calling, "Kepha" ...then He uses John's name. (M) I assume, from Scripture, the third man is James. (B) Mark 14:32 "And they went to a place which was called Gethsem'ane; and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I pray." 33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled."
(M) starts with a quote from Isaiah 53:5 "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed."
(M) The Sanhedrin do not go near Judas. They throw the thirty pieces of silver at him; as though he were… "unclean". (ME, B) Matthew 26:14 "Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" They paid him thirty pieces of silver,""
(M) back to the Devil... He is taunting Christ with questions to raise doubts: "Who is your Father?"... "Who are you?" Then a serpent sticks it's tail out of Satan's nose and then slides out from under Satan's robes near the ground...sliding towards where Jesus lays prostrate on the ground. The snake writhes over the hand of Jesus as He stands, the snake falling to the ground. Jesus ignores the snake, Christ leans on a wall in the Garden and then suddenly crushes the head of the serpent... (ME, B) Genesis 3:15 "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." [RSV] (ME) In Genesis Satan ‘nips’ at the heal of our Saviour, while Christ, the ’seed’ of the woman (What Woman ?), ‘crushes’ the head of the serpent.
(M) back to the Garden... Temple guards in the night with torches, accompanied by Judas Iscariot. They approach Jesus. (ME, B) Matthew 26:47 "While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people."
(ME, B) Luke 22:49 "And when those who were about him saw what would follow, they said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, "No more of this!" And he touched his ear and healed him." (M) Jesus healed the ear of Malchus. Luke 22:51 "he [Jesus] touched his [Malchus‘] ear and healed him." Malchus doesn’t move, he is stunned. He is kneeling on the ground when he is healed by Jesus. Just a moment ago he was writhing in pain. James ran off and so did John.
(M) Peter was held by the Temple guards and Jesus told him... John 18:11 "Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?"" (B) Matthew 26:52 "Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword."
The guards were holding Peter ...Jesus told Peter to drop the sword He did and the guards fell to the ground and Peter got away (M) (ME, B) John 18:5 "They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When he said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground."
(M) The Temple guards seize Jesus very roughly and begin to pummel Him with their fists as they chain Him and tie His hands and lead Him out of the Garden... (ME, B) John 18:12 "So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound him."
(M) In a home not far away… Mother Mary wakes with Mary Magdalene at this moment... they hold each other... Mother Mary says... "Why is this Night Different from all Other Nights?" This verse is from the opening of the Jewish Seder meal. Seder (ME) Passover is the 8 day observance commemorating the freedom and exodus of the Israelites (Jewish slaves) from Egypt during the reign of the Pharaoh Ramses II. The holiday's name - Pesach, meaning "passing over" or "protection" in Hebrew, is derived from the instructions given to Moses by God , (Exodus 12:21ff).
(M) One of Jesus’ eyes was closed from the beating of the guards and He was bloody all over, His mouth was very bloody. He already looked like a man; "crushed for our sins". (Isaiah 53) Judas is also watching the proceedings. Mother Mary comes with Mary Magdalene and John. They see Peter… he calls to them. Jesus is watching a carpenter work on something in the courtyard… The director uses "flashbacks" to connect The Passion with other scenes in the life of Jesus. [The first scene * switch (memory)] He remembers when He was working on a table and His Mother calls to Him to come and eat. [high table] When Mother Mary arrives the scene of the "Questioning of Jesus" proceeds, but not until His Mother arrives.
(ME) This happens throughout the movie...I think to show, not only, the connection between Mother & Son, but also the New Eve to the New Adam... This also establishes Mother Mary as a partner in The Passion... (ME, B) Luke 2:34 "and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted 35 And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts thoughts may be revealed."
(ME) Many times throughout the movie the scene would not move forward until the Mother of Jesus arrived and made eye contact with her Son...then the scene moved forward. For example: The Questioning by the Sanhedrin The Scourging The Crucifixion Each time the scene would seem to "pause" until Mother Mary arrived.
(M) A soldier informs Pilate that there might be a problem with the Jews because of the arrest of Jesus. (M) Pilate and Claudia his wife, she says; ""Have nothing to do with that righteous man. I suffered much in a dream today because of him." " (Matthew 27:19)
