ACTS 1:1-5 []
1 In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught
until the day he was taken up, after giving instructions through the holy Spirit to the apostles whom he
had chosen.
He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during
forty days 2 and speaking about the
kingdom of God.
While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for "the promise of
the Father 3 about which you have heard me speak;
for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the holy Spirit."
(Commentary) The Acts of the Apostles, written by St. Luke, the writer of the Gospel of Luke and has
been identified with St. Paul's "Luke, the beloved physician" (Colossians 4:14).
"In the first book" would refer to The Gospel of Luke.
"Theophilus" may be a real person or may be an avenue to reach all believers. Theophilus = beloved
of God or all those who seek God with a sincere heart.
The apostles stayed together in Jerusalem. Christ had ordered them not to depart, but to wait for the
out pouring of the Holy Spirit.
vs:6; KINGDOM []
When they had gathered together they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going  to restore the
kingdom to Israel?"
He answered them, "It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by
his own authority.
But you will receive
power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Throughout His ministry Jesus Experienced difficulties. One, in particular, was when He spoke of 'the
kingdom of God', as found in Mark 1:14.
Jesus meant one thing by 'the Kingdom', and those who listened to Him meant another.

The Jews were always very conscious of being God's Chosen People. They saw the 'Kingdom' in
political terms.

Jesus meant by 'Kingdom': a society on earth where God's Will would be as perfectly done as it
is in Heaven.

Because of that, it would be a Kingdom founded on love and NOT power.

vs:8; POWER
We become (as the Early Church did) witnesses for Christ by the POWER of The Holy Spirit, which we receive at Baptism and is stirred up or deepened in The Sacrament of Confirmation.

Witness: A witness is someone who knows 1st hand that something is true (it is not hearsay), as
would be stated on any court TV show.

The REAL Christian Witness is in how we conduct our daily lives.

Question? How can we be a Witness of Christ in our daily lives?
Acts 1:9-11 []
But when some in their obstinacy and disbelief disparaged the Way before the assembly, he withdrew
and took his disciples with him and began to hold daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
This continued for two years with the result that all the inhabitants of the province of Asia heard the
word of the Lord, Jews and Greeks alike.
So extraordinary were the mighty deeds God accomplished at the hands of Paul

Only St. Luke tells this story and he has already related it in his Gospel LK 24:50-53
13 Then he led them (out) as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them.
As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven.
They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
and they were continually in the temple praising God. 14

Also, we see our future in The Second Coming. It is a call to make ourselves ready, for that day when it

Question? Are you prepared to meet your Maker?
Acts 1:12-20 []
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a
day's journey
When they entered the city they went to the upper room where they were staying, Peter and John and
James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the
Zealot, and Judas son of James.
All these devoted themselves with
one accord to prayer, together with some women, and Mary the
mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
During those days
Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (there was a group of about one
hundred and twenty persons in the one place). He said,
"My brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled which the holy Spirit spoke beforehand through the mouth
of David, concerning Judas, who was the guide for those who arrested Jesus.
He was numbered among us and was allotted a share in this ministry.
He bought a parcel of land with the wages of his iniquity, and falling headlong, he burst open in the
middle, and all his insides spilled out. 7
This became known to everyone who lived in Jerusalem, so that the parcel of land was called in their
language 'Akeldama,' that is, Field of Blood.
For it is written in the Book of Psalms: 'Let his encampment become desolate, and may no one dwell in
it.' And: 'May another take his office.'

A Sabbath's Day Journey = about 1/2 a mile

I always notice that The Blessed Mother was in The UPPER ROOM. She was part of the group
filled with The Holy Spirit on Pentecost. How appropriate since her Spouse is The Holy Spirit!

From this small gathering of 120, we have, today worldwide, over 1 billion Catholics! [http://www.]

St. Peter makes a speech, starting in vs:15 and by vs:22
He finishes his speech and the Early Christian Church accepts, without question, what he says!
His Authority is accepted without argument or discussion! AND they immediately act on it!

Here we see an example of the authority of the First Head of The Church, St. Peter.

Today The Pope's still make declarations!

Question? Do you follow the teachings of The Church today without question?
Acts 1:21-26 []
Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came
and went among us,
beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us, become with us a
witness to his resurrection."
So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias.
Then they prayed, "You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen
to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place."
8 Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven

They chose someone to replace Judas from among those who were with them all along, from the
beginning of the ministry of Jesus.

The Jews would cast lots to fill the offices and duties in the Temple.

Jesus is still with us today. The REAL Christian is the one who lives all of their life with Christ.

Question? What does the statement above mean to you?
